The Gunners slipped to a 3-1 defeat at capital rivals Chelsea on Saturday, leaving them 12 points adrift of the table-topping Blues. This had every Gooner jumping for joy, simply because Arsene Wenger, previously known to be particularly stingy, has a £70 million transfer fund, which made every fan believe that Arsenal could well challenge for the title in 2013/14. And 4 points ahead of their bitter North London rivals Tottenham. This, after everyone was sure Mikel Arteta was out of his depth. After everyone was sure he was going to be sacked halfway through the season....

If we look back to my transfer priority list, we are batting zero so far. We did acquire Cech and, on paper, that is a step up from Ospina or Szczesny. However, our defensive woes have primarily stemmed from those playing in front of the goalkeeper. Might it have been better to sell or loan out Ospina and allow Szczesny to learn from Cech? That was what he missed when we failed to acquire Schwarzer a few years ago and threw a promising Szczesny into the fray with a very fragile line in front of him....

It’s his fault we finished so strong in last season’s run-in, his fault that we beat Newcastle on the last day of the season to qualify for the Champions League, his fault that we managed a tie against Napoli on Saturday, his fault that we suffered a loss against Galatasaray on Sunday. It’s all his fault that we haven’t had any significant signings this summer. Without him, we might have stumbled out of the top four, thereby convincing Arsene that, yes, we do in fact need signings....

For the six months to the end of November 2017, Arsenal’s profits climbed from £12.6m, with the Premier League club’s cash reserves standing at £137.6m. After tax, profits stood at £20.4m - up from £10.3m - for the six-month period. Hull pushed Arsenal onto the back foot right from the beginning of the match, as ex-Manchester United player James Chester gave Hull the lead as he executed a cute finish to divert a wayward shot from Tom Huddlestone into the bottom corner of the goal. Arsenal were visibly shocked by the instant goal, and tried mounting a comeback, but were made to suffer again, as Hull made them pay for some lax defending....

Arsene Wenger’s side would have moved four points clear of fifth placed Tottenham with a win at the Emirates Stadium. But they were forced to settle for a point as obdurate Everton’s physical approach succeeded in frustrating the hosts. Third placed Arsenal are now two points clear of Chelsea and Tottenham in the race to qualify for the Champions League. However Arsenal still have plenty of work to do as Chelsea have two games in hand on Wenger’s team, while Tottenham have played a game less than their north London rivals....

The defending FA cup champions were missing star forwards Alexis Sanchez and Theo Walcott in their starting lineup as they were included in the reserves while Oliver Giroud lead the front line as the lone striker. While both sides didn’t have clear cut chances, The Hammers looked dangerous on the break with their new signing Dimitri Payet looking sharp as he was involved amidst all of their attacking play. The deadlock was broken in the 42nd minute after Payet’s delivery from a dead ball situation was met by Kouyate who was first to reach to it as he headed the ball into the back of the net before an outstretched Peter Cech who failed to grab hold of it....

In case you didn’t know… The Gunners are currently locked in a battle to finish in the top four spots which would ensure a return to Europe’s elite competition next season. The North London outfit are placed fifth on the league table and are two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea. Both sides have two games left to play this season and a slip on Chelsea’s part could help the Gunners secure Champions League qualification....

Arsene Wenger earlier replied to Mourinho’s comment saying they were “silly, disrespectful remarks”. Mikel Arteta commented on Mourinho’s remarks saying, “If, for you, success is only to win a trophy, it doesn’t matter how, then I think he (Wenger) is the way he (Mourinho) is saying,” “If you analyse everything he has done for the club, then if he is a failure I have a different opinion. I don’t like it when someone criticises my team-mates, the staff, the manager, the club because I see what he does every day to look after this club....
